It's Not You, It's...No, Wait, It's You

Don’t Set Expectations High, You’ll Always Be a Winner

From Glamour’s Smitten:

When Kate and her husband were newlyweds, they were strapped for cash. So, instead of buying regular holiday gifts, they gave each other…

…love letters!

“Things were pretty lean,” says Kate. “I could have written the book on ‘365 Ways With Pasta.’ But it wasn’t all bad. We stayed home and played a lot of backgammon. We read a lot of books.”

And when the holidays came around, they wrote sweet letters to each other.

“Now I look forward to writing—and receiving—one every Christmas,” she says. “If our house is ever on fire, those letters are the first thing I’ll grab.”

Instead of handing this off to supercheesy as was my original inclination, I decided I would comment instead. And say this:

Be careful, especially early on in the relationship. The tendency to want to do really romantic things is high, but then you’re stuck with that expectation forever and you’ll NEVER TOP IT. So half ass it and every year you can do just a little bit better and always be the hero.

Note: Even I’m not sarcastic and cynical enough to actually mean all that…I pretty much just said it because it was funny. Don’t hate.
